Google's Major Ranking Algorithm Updates Till 2019 (Updated)

As we all know, Google Algorithms play a major role in deciding the ranking of a website for a particular keyword. Google release an algorithmic update at least once in month. That update can be minor or major which entirely depend on Google. Not every algorithm change doesn't affect the Google search results to a great extent but there were few major algorithm updated released by Google over the time that heavily affected SERPs search results.

Here we will be having a short overview of each of these named or un-named major Google Algorithm update.
  • Google Panda: Google Panda update was initially released on Feb 24, 2011. It majorly focused on to rate websites on the basis of content quality and to down-rank all those websites which contains Spam, low quality, copied or thin content.
  • Google Penguin: Google Penguin update was initially released on April 24, 2012 to focus on down-ranking or demoting website with low quality links in Google search results. The websites which were using low quality link building techniques or black hat techniques were penalised.
  • Google Pirate: Released in Aug 2012, Google's Pirate update is a filter introduced in August 2012 designed to prevent sites with many copyright infringement reports, as filed through Google's DMCA system, from ranking well in Google's listings. The filter is periodically updated.
  • Google Hummingbird: Google Hummingbird update is a major algorithm change that has to do with interpreting search queries, (particularly longer, conversational searches) and providing search results that match searcher intent, rather than individual keywords within the query.
  • Google Pigeon: Google Pigeon update was initially released on July 24, 2014 which  in Google's local search algorithm updates. The update is aimed to increase the ranking of local listing in a search. The changes will also affect the search results shown in Google Maps along with the regular Google search results.
  • Google Mobilegeddon (Mobile Friendly Update): Google's Mobilegeddon update (initial release: April 21, 2015) is meant to ensure that pages optimised for mobile devices rank at the top of mobile search, and subsequently, down-rank pages that are not mobile friendly.
  • Google RankBrain: With an initial release on October 26, 2015, Google RankBrain is a machine learning system that helps Google better decipher the meaning behind queries, and serve best-matching search results in response to those queries.
  • Google Possum: Google Possum update was released on September 1, 2016 with an aim to make changes in Google's local ranking filter.
  • Google Fred: Announced in March 8, 2017, Google Fred update is a series of algorithm updates from Google to target and tackle black-hat tactics.
  • Google "Medic" Core Update: In August 1, 2018, Google released a major "Medic" Core Update. It was observed that this update disproportionately affected sites in the health and wellness sector but later on large-scale impact was seen in all sectors.
  • Google June 2019 Core Update: Google has released it core algorithm update on 2nd June, 2019 in its endeavor to improve Google search results to provide more relevancy in search results. This is the latest major algorithm by Google and is still unnamed.
